SECTION 1.
[40694]
(Confidential.) Sir,
No. 1.
Admiralty to Foreign Office.--(Received December 12.)
Admiralty, December 11, 1907. WITH reference to your letter of to-day's date, I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to transmit, for the information of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, copy of a telegram, dated to-day, that has been sent to the Commander-in-chief, China, on the subject of piracy in the Canton River.
I am, &c.
(Signed)
C. 1. THOMAS.
Inclosure in No. 1.
Admiralty to Vice-Admiral Sir A. Moore.
(Telegraphic.) P.
Admiralty, December 11, 1907. SIR EDWARD GREY, though not desiring your patrolling arrangements to become less stringent, considers that, as it is possible that the Viceroy may be inclined to agree to a satisfactory settlement as the result of the measures now adopted, it would be expedient that the patrolling vessels should proceed no further up the river than they may already have done until it is seen whether such is the case.
Their Lordships desire you to give the necessary instructions accordingly, subject to there being no local reasons to the contrary.
